Glenn Ford, de son vrai nom Gwyllyn Samuel Newton Ford, est né au Quebec. Il débute sur la scène de l'école de Santa Monica, et il enchaîne alors avec des tournées sur la côte Ouest. En 1939, il est repéré par un découvreur de talents, il fait ses premiers pas au cinéma, dans Heaven with a Barbed Wire Fence pour la Fox, mais signe parallèlement un contrat avec la Columbia, avec qui il restera plus de 14 ans.
